I started to read this book in February 2024. I was drawn to it because of my deep interest in AI, and getting an understanding how it was born as a technology. Dr. Fei-Fei L, was instrumental in the early stages of AI development.
This is a very personal journey of a Chinese immigrant into the United States in the 1990's, from knowing only a few words of English to become a renowned data Scientist and professor at Stanford University.
People are quick to jump on headline grabbing stories about AI becoming an existential threat to humanity by evolving beyond human control. By Dr Fei-Fei makes the point that if you want to worry about AI then there are aspects much closer to home that we need to consider, such as deep fakes, election interference, in built biases, copyright issue, the list goes on. because the public use of AI is still in its infancy, there is going to be a period where the interaction with AI platforms become messy and imperfect, but this is like every other advancement we make in life. You have to walk before you can run and inevitably, sometimes you will fall down in the process. The potential for AI doing societal good is unlimited, in my opinion, there has been very little public discourse around how AI can help strengthen public services and Government departments by improving efficiency and general outcomes, that will benefit people at a societal level, not every AI solution will benefit only corporates.
